For NRC-Handelsblad I also made an illustration about the ‘Best Kept Secret’-festival.

The Grumpy Dept. adds:
The festival’s organizer mailed that he was very happy with the drawing and almost offered to buy the original, before he remembered he was a stingy Dutchman.
He was no exception.
The director ( or writer, I forgot) of the succesfull ‘Penoza’TV-crime-series wrote a delirious mail when he saw the cover of the ‘VPRO’-TV-guide but balked at the modest price, just as a famous Dutch filmscriptwriter did when he called me to express his satisfaction with his depiction in the ‘Filmkrant’ and was told that for € 200,= ( a so-called ‘friend’s price’) it would be his to frame and hang…
Oh well.
As the late Gram Parsons once lamented: ‘Who’s gonna throw that hippie-boy a coin?”

To end this sorry tale in the best of spirits (…) here is a poster for the coming New Year’s party at the ‘Pacific Parc’, a café/restaurant & free rockvenue in Amsterdam.

Around 1975 I made this cover for a bootleg-lyricsbook. A couple of years later someone ( who, I can’t recall) handed me a piece of paper with a phonenumber that I should call; Lou Reed was in town, in a hotel and wanted to see me. As a member of the Black Spoon-club (a club I’d been wanting to join since I heard the Banana-album) I proudly showed the piece of paper to my amazed fellow shooters but I never made the call. I lost my nerve when I imagined to meet a grumpy Lou, maybe angry with me for stealing his lyrics, surrounded by NY-drag-queens and the lot …
Not much later ‘Take No Prisoners’ came out and there, on the inner-sleeve, was my drawing. The bootlegger bootlegged…

The drawing below was made for music-magazine ‘Muziek Expres’, with a well-meant moralistic ( but rather hypocritical) advice.
Had Lou listened to it he might have been alive still…

Then again I didn’t listen either…

True, it’s not the most elegant way to update this site, stuffing new drawings in the ‘News’-dept. but at the moment it’s better than no update at all, I think/hope. And I decided to go back to writing in English because the site turns out to have many non-Dutch visitors and it feels impolite to keep them from knowing what is being told.

Here some things I did for the NRC-Handelsblad-newspaper this year. The first illustrations are about the ‘Amsterdam Art Prize’ and the pressure Dutch artists endure from the capitalist government to ‘sell’ themselves and make money instead of art.

Culinair kanon Johannes van Dam is uitgegeten. Epicurus hebbe zijn ziel! Voor een boek van Johannes, die ik kende als vriend van Swarte en klant van de ‘Real Free Press’, heb ik in 2004 een voorkant getekend.Na een bezoek aan zijn met kookgerei&-lectuur volgestouwde domeintje aan de Amsterdamse Spuistraat, waar me de bedoelingen met het boek werden uitgelegd, toog ik aan het werk. Met mijn schets ging ik terug naar Johannes, die hevig ontstemd reageerde: ik had ‘m afgebeeld met een ‘choker’ om zijn nek, zo’n zijden kakkersshawltje, iets waarmee hij zich nimmer zou tooien! Terecht gegeneerd stamelde ik mijn excuses en maakte bijgaande (van het Net gehaalde, slecht gefotografeerde) versie.

Morgen is het de laatste dag van de duo-verko-expo met Harma Heikens, vriendin en sculpteuse fabuleuse, in gallerie KochXBos in de Amsterdamse Jordaan en de laatste kans iets even nutteloos als onmisbaar aan te schaffen: kunst! (En geen tuutpiepknorkunst!) De opening, 3 weken geleden geleek een goedaardige ‘stampede’. Mede dankzij de medewerking van het ‘puinblues’-tweetal van Lo-Lite.
